As was said above, my name is Arctic. Nice to meet you.
I make art featuring animals, futuristic themes, and computer software. In addition to that, I make little raggedy websites and other computery, non-grass-touching things, even! Of course, I’m constantly learning and nothing I create is ever going to be perfect.
Since 2021, I’ve been a proud member of the FOSS community (I’m not a Stallman-worshipping zealot “Fossoid” or whatever people on Mastodon are calling them, however. those people are strange.) and have used primarily free (libre) programs, including GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) and Krita, in the production of my artwork.
I have also been using Linux full-time since April 2023. (Kubuntu at the time of writing this)
On a final note, I hope I make your day brighter sometime.
Information about my personal mascot, Axia (seen below) can be found at this page.
Questions you may bother to ask.
1. What hardware do you use?
For drawing, I generally use a Wacom Intuos S with an ASUS Q550LF laptop - it’s not very sophisticated, but it’s what I have for now until I can find the money for a better setup.
2. Why aren’t you on any mainstream social media?
With the exception of YouTube, DeviantArt, and Discord, I am not active on any popular social media. The reason for this is not only because of privacy and anti-corporate reasons that have been discussed heavily in the online world and beyond, but modern social media also subjects the user to pressure from algorithms, excessive drama, and general “enshittification.” All of this noise tends to stress me out, so I usually gravitate towards smaller, more independent platforms like my Mastodon instance.
I am continuing to make efforts to migrate to alternative platforms if possible.
3. Why do you use free/open-source software?
to be written.
4. You’re a furry, right?
I personally believe that “Furry” is only a label that one chooses to have, so in spite of the existence of Axia and my art style of drawing anthro characters, no, I am not a “furry,” or at least I choose not to identify as one. The label “furry” and its associated fandom carry a lot of unsavory baggage that I wish not to be associated with.
Regardless, if you still want to call me that, you can and I won’t care at all.
4a. Do you use Fur Affinity or plan to use it
The answer is a resounding no.
Information about this website
Arctaxion Central is hosted on Neocities and, since December 2023, is also built using the Hugo static site generator (SSG). It is based on the “Slightly Fancy” web template by Eggramen (link), with modifications and extensions by me.
Fonts used
- Work Sans (For display and headings)
- Cantarell (for body text)
Static site generator Lore
Originally, when I created this site, I thought I didn’t need SSGs. I didn’t even know what they were at the time and assumed they were website builders in the style of Wix. Eventually, I changed my mind after I browsed out of boredom through the GIMP website repository, and discovered that they used an SSG (Pelican at the time of writing this) to keep the headers and footers on their site consistent across all pages.
Realizing that that was just what I was looking for in my homepage project, I naturally decided to follow suit.
Custom domain?
Eventually, I’ll register a custom domain for Arctaxion Central when I start making some of my own income. However, custom domains on Neocities require a supporter account, so in addition to the domain fees, I’ll also need to pay 5$/month for the supporter features.
I will have to think about that for a while…
